Free English speaking apps in Sri Lanka: what is actually free, and what it is worth

The short answer

A few English speaking apps are free forever, with a daily limit: usually a handful of short sessions, or about ten minutes. ChatGPT and Gemini can be used for voice practice within their free limits. Most dedicated speaking apps, Chappie included, are free to download with a free trial and then a subscription. Free gets you a daily habit; it usually runs out somewhere before a real interview or meeting.

What is actually free?

“Free” means three different things in the app stores, and the difference matters more than the word.

Some speaking apps are free forever, with a limit: a few short sessions a day, or about ten minutes. Enough to keep a habit going. Nowhere near enough to rehearse a whole interview.

Some give you free lessons but charge for the speaking. The lessons, the games and the notes cost nothing, and the part you actually came for, talking to the tutor, sits on the paid plan. Check which part is free before you download.

And some, Chappie among them, are a free trial, then a subscription: the whole app for a few days, then a monthly or yearly plan unless you cancel. It’s the best way to test an app on your real situation, provided you set a reminder for the day the trial ends.

Then there’s ChatGPT and Gemini. Both have free plans with voice conversations, within limits that change, and you set the practice up yourself. How to practise speaking English with ChatGPT or Gemini has the prompts.

Is Chappie free?

Chappie is free to download on Android and iPhone and starts with a free trial of the whole app: every situation, every correction, with the explanations in Sinhala, Tamil or Hindi. After the trial it’s a subscription, and the price is shown in the app before you pay. If it isn’t for you, cancel before the trial ends and you pay nothing. The rest of the facts are on the Chappie English app page.

What is the best free way to practise speaking English?

Your own voice, mostly. Put the free apps around it and you have a real routine that costs nothing:

  1. 1

Talk to yourself, five minutes a day

What you’re doing, what you did, what you’ll do tomorrow. Out loud. It costs nothing and it’s where most of the improvement happens. How to practise speaking English alone has the routine.

  2. 2

Use a free daily limit for conversation

Ten minutes with a free speaking app, or a chatbot with a good prompt, gives you the reply that self-talk can’t.

  3. 3

    Shadow one short clip

Thirty seconds of a newsreader or a podcast, repeated out loud, copying the rhythm. Free, and the fastest way to sound more natural.

  4. 4

Rehearse the big conversation on a free trial

When the interview or the meeting is real, use a free trial of a dedicated app to rehearse that exact situation, every day that week.

Practise it

When the interview is real, rehearse it in Chappie’s free trial, with the feedback explained in Sinhala, Tamil or Hindi.

What can a free plan not do?

Give you enough time, for one: ten minutes a day is a habit, and an interview rehearsal is longer than that. Tell you what to fix, usually; free tiers tend to show an overall score, and the exact word or sound sits behind the paid plan. Explain in your language; most free options explain in English only. And give you a plan. With a chatbot, you write the scenario, ask for the corrections and keep track of your own mistakes.

How do you use a free trial without being charged?

  1. 1

Set a reminder the day you start

For the day before the trial ends. Then the decision is yours, and never an accident.

  2. 2

Test it on a real conversation

The interview or the meeting you’re worried about, and only that. If it helps there, it’s worth paying for. If it doesn’t, cancel.

  3. 3

    On an iPhone

Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions. Choose the app and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the trial ends.

  4. 4

    On Android

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Choose the app and tap Cancel subscription.

When is it worth paying?

When something real is coming and the free limit stops you before you’re ready. Ten minutes a day of general chat won’t get you through Thursday’s interview; ten minutes a day on that interview, with feedback, will. Start free, notice exactly where the limit stops you, and pay only for that.
